Located on the Rosebud Reservation, we are a community development organization working to build a healthy, culturally relevant, and locally based food system for the Sicangu Lakota Oyate – in other words, to return to a state of food sovereignty. We run a number of projects to further this goal, including the Keya Wakpala Community Garden (a one-acre teaching and production garden) and the Keya Wakpala Farmers’ Market. In addition to these projects, we work with and share traditional Lakota food knowledge; seek to increase community nutrition education; offer technical assistance for home gardeners; partner with our tribal grocery store to increase healthy options; and continually seek out new ideas and projects to implement. We work closely with a number of partners throughout the reservation including the Sinte Gleska University Greenhouse, SDSU Extension Rosebud, and most obviously in our work with the Rosebud Food Sovereignty Coalition. We are always looking for new projects, and new partners, so please get in touch!
